HYDROLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS
Flood and hydrological analysis: Fish River Catchment
The Fish River catchment in Namibia is an area of concern to the Government as it is a flood prone area having registered very high floods, causing extensive damage to the town of Mariental and the irrigation schemes downstream of Hardap Dam. Measures needed to be put in place to curb further damage as the catchment undergoes its natural flood cycle. The system was modelled, and various mitigation measures were analysed and suggested for the area.

Application of Mike Customised Real Time for Flood Prediction in the Inkomati CMA
This pilot project was used to develop a flood prediction system for the IUCMA using the Mike Operations software. The system was successfully implemented and ran flood forecasts on the Crocodile river system in the Inkomati catchment. It contains a predictive hydrological model as well as a hydraulic model integrated into a real time operational framework.

Development of Hydrologically Correct DEM
Set up system to provide a full hydrologically corrected DEM for the entire Inkomati Catchment Management Agency. The requirement was to use detailed contour data to generate a DEM at high resolutions and then generate a corrected DEM river delineation, catchment delineation and calculation of dam volumes.

ESKOM Gariep and Van der Kloof Dam Optimisation
Research project to develop a set of operating algorithms to optimise releases from Gariep and Van der Kloof dams. Project showed that with information from runoff and on the actual system it was possible to pre-release water from the dams which would prevent the flooding impact and increase electricity generation through the turbines.

Development of the integrated annual and real-time operating rules for the Western Cape Water Supply System (WCSS)
Setup a decision support system for the Western Cape Water Supply System which was able to provide key information for the overall system integrating several different modelling frameworks. This enabled the models to run and automatically and inform users on the amounts to release to meet water demands as well as provide information on curtailment and restriction decisions.

Development of the integrated annual and real-time operating rules for the Western Cape Water Supply System (WCSS)
An online decision support system was setup to assist in the improved management of the system. This integrated hydraulic models within a water resources modelling framework, in an operational system which optimised releases and provided early warnings on the Western Cape Water Supply System. Information was published to a set of management dashboards that were accessible over the internet.

The Umgeni Water WRMDSS (water resources management system).
The WRMDSS provides web-based data capture for geographically dispersed Umgeni Water offices. Data such as dam levels, river flow, wastewater treatment volumes, and rainfall is captured by staff on a daily basis. This data is then validated and stored in a central database at head office. Detailed web reports and automated email reports are generated and disseminated within Umgeni Water, displaying data such as historic reservoir trajectories, treatment plant intake and sales, reservoir levels, and tabular reports ready for quarterly reporting documents.

Water Availability Assessment Study, Sabie River in the Inkomati WMA
The Inkomati WMA was considered to be stressed with water requirements exceeding the available supply in all areas except the Sabie River catchment. There was a need to perform a hydrological and systems analysis in this area to determine the water availability on the system and ensure that all users received their allocation.

The collection and transformation of hydrological and climatic data for the SLURP model for application in the Olifants River basin (IWMI)
Team collected and processed all the hydrological information to develop the SLURP model which was then setup and run on the Olifants river catchment. A full simulation model was set up and verified producing spatially discrete hydrology for the entire catchment.
